Chamber Choir Explores "Landscapes and Moonlight" Nov. 22

Story posted November 17, 2008

The Bowdoin Chamber Choir, under the direction of Shannon Chase, will perform a program titled "Landscapes and Moonlight" at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008, in the Bowdoin Chapel.

"Landscapes and Moonlight" will feature music that demonstrates the intersection of nature and sound, and the human experience of the moods of nature. Its repertoire explores folk melodies from Estonia, Spain and America, includes examples of modern aleatory ("chance music"), and at times employs instrumental sound effects. From a cold autumn night to cracking thunder, the music both concretely and abstractly depicts mood and nature.

The program will include Estonian composer Veljo Tormis's "Autumn Landscapes," Eric Whitacre's "Water Night" and "Cloudburst," Murray Schafer's "Epitaph for Moonlight," Carmen Cavallaro's "Dos Poemas" ("El Grito" and "Despues de Pasar"), and "How Can I Keep from Singing?", an American folksong arranged by Ronald Staheli.

The concert is open to the public and admission is free. For more information call the Bowdoin Department of Music at 798-4141.
