Student Research

Student Research

One of the main goals of the Coastal Studies Center is to support and encourage independent student research and projects. Activities related to coastal topics from all disciplines are welcome. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged. See examples of last summer (2008) research projects.

There are several contexts in which students may engage in independent student research and projects.

  • Students may sign up for Honors projects or independent studies projects within their departments to engage in research at the CSC, or to work on coastal topics that may not be immediately or completely located at the CSC. Such research will usually take place during the school year. Currently ongoing projects are described on the Honors and Independent study projects page.

  • Students may engage in additional research with potential for funding of stipends and limited research costs. This additional research will usually be expected to occur in the summer as part of a group of research students that we expect to be assembled every summer at the CSC. This research is funded by a series of grants and endowments at the CSC (see funding sources below). A competition for these research stipends is held every year; details for how to apply and due dates are available under the heading "Applying for funding of student research stipends and limited research costs."
  • Students may wish to work with other Bowdoin students on interdisciplinary projects.

Transportation

CSC pays transportation costs for students to drive between campus to CSC during the course of their research projects. Students who have their own cars may get reimbursed for mileage costs (@ 0.485 per mile). Students who do not have their own cars may borrow college minivans in order to drive between the college and CSC. Before starting a CSC-related project that will incur transportation costs, students should send a one page summary of their anticipated transportation needs to the director for approval of the expected expenditure.
